Announced in May 1998, Take2 would co-publish 4x4 Mud Monsters along with Gathering of Developers. Part of the development would be done by Edge of Reality, founded by Rob Cohen, lead
programmer on Acclaim's N64 exclusive hit - Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Another developer taling part in Mud Monsters was Terminal Reality, who had already created Monster Truck Madness
for Microsoft.
The game was scheduled for first quater of 1999.

In January 1999 Take2 announced that they had secured the license from Microsoft to publish a game based on their Monster Truck series. So the game initially known as 4x4 Mud
Monsters was renamed and became Monster Truck Madness 64. The release happened at July 30th 1999 in the US and August 30th 1999 in Europe and Australia.
